Discussion forum in Barentu

Barentu, 18 April 2005 (ERINA) - In continuation of the discussion forum held in Asmara from 12 to 13 April, 700 participants including Army commanders, sub- zone administrators, PFDJ heads, Assembly members, branch heads of ministries, as well as representatives of national associations took part in a similar forum in Barentu, the capital of Gash-Barka region, on 16 and 17 April.

Addressing participants of the Forum organized under the theme "Our chosen paths, challenges and achievements", Mr. Hagos Gebrehiwet, Head of Economic Affairs at the PFDJ, noted that the Front succeeded to make national independence a reality by overcoming internal and external hurdles. He further underlined that the strength of the Front lies in unity and clear political and ideological vision. Mr. Hagos also said that at the present juncture characterized with development drive and resistance, we will no doubt emerge victories through dedicated and patient endeavors based on clear perception of fostering social justice.

After conducting open and in-depth discussions on eight topics, the participants in six groups put forth constructive ideas. They underlined that giving precedence to the nation's sovereignty both the people and the Defense Forces have to be ready for any eventuality, fight against the enemy's psychological warfare, avoid dependence on aid and achieve food security. Furthermore, the people are called upon to exert vigorous effort in line with the principle of self-reliance, minimize expenses and boost production, thereby build a strong economy as well as nurture patriotism among the youth.

Moreover, the task of ensuring the active participation of women in political matters, endure temporary challenges on the way to realize brighter future, and provide training to persons fulfilling their duties in regional assembly and administrative bodies as well as community magistrates administrations received close attention at the Forum.

The Administrator of Gash-Barka region, Mr. Kahsai Gebrehiwet, read out the synopsis of the Discussion Forum that took place in Asmara. Also speaking on the occasion, Maj. General Filipos Woldeyohannes, Commander of Operation Zone Two said: "As the foundation of our unity and values is our strength is it our historic responsibility to further enrich and pass them over to succeeding generations."

Participants of the Forum expressed their determination to work for the implementation of the views and opinions aired out during the discussion and called for conducting similar initiatives in the future.
