Cabinet of Ministers assessing nation's first quarterly work performance

Elabered, 26 April 2005 (ERINA) -
The Eritrean Cabinet of Ministers today began an assessment meeting in Elabered on the country's first quarterly work performance. The Ministerial Cabinet held deliberations on the work progress registered so far.

In an opening statement, President Isaias Afwerki said that the current assessment of work performance is not only limited to accomplishments over the last three months but also provide impetus to the implementation of programs in the remaining months of this year.

Later, the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Arefaine Berhe, presented a report in which he particularly outlined programs to ensure food security through effective water conservation. He pointed out that works of terracing in the Central, Southern and Anseba regions respectively have been carried out that would make possible the cultivation of about 8,500 hectares. Mr. Arefaine also stated that water diversion scheme aimed at putting 3,200 hectares under cultivation has been finalized in Gash-Barka region.

Moreover, the Minister said that there are plans to plough over half a million hectares in 2005, and that an estimated harvest of 4.4 million quintals could be obtained provided there is adequate rainfall.

Following deliberations on the report, the Cabinet stressed the need to vigorously pursue the ongoing activities towards attaining food security.

Similarly, the Cabinet heard report by Mr. Woldenkiel Gebremariam, Minister of Land, Water and Environment, concerning the Ministry's work performance in the past three months.
The report covered, among other things, land ( tiesa) allotment for individual citizens, land designation for residential purposes and handing out of procedures regarding the domain of activities pertaining to land, water and environment.
