Cabinet of Ministers continues session

The Cabinet of Ministers continued its meeting on assessing the work performance during the first quarterly of 2005. The ministers of trade and industry and that of public works presented reports in today's session.
In his report, the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr. Gergis Teklemichael, outlined the steps being taken to assess the existing situation as regards the status of industrial plants, encouraging new investment ventures, renewal and issuance of licenses as well as enforcing control measures and promoting human resource development.
Regarding the trade sector, the Minister explained the encouragement given to merchants, promoting export activities and import substitution measures and enhancing the vitality of public trading agencies as being some of the major work plans envisaged for this year.
Furthermore, Dr. Gergis gave briefings on the initiatives taken to identify the existing situation of industrial establishments and thereby reach conclusion on the momentum of privatization. He also explained the progress made so far in efforts to strengthen industrial production pertaining to food security. Besides, the Minister presented a report concerning the handling of import-export trade.
Similarly, the Minister of Public Works, Mr. Abraha Asfaha, presented a report encompassing the work plans and achievements registered in the construction of roads, bridges, airports, housing complexes and water supply infrastructure facilities, among others. He cited the progress made in the contraction of the Serejeka-Shebah road, 50 Km. of which has already been completed, the asphalting of Barentu-Tessenei road (98% completed), the finalization of work regarding dirt road tasks along the Massawa-Assab highway, in addition to on-going activities on the Gahtelai-Wadilabka and Keren-Geleb roads, as well as the asphalting of main streets of Keren city.
As regards construction activities pertaining to airports, Mr. Abraha cited expansion activities on Asmara International Airport and finalization measures of the new airport in Massawa.
On housing construction, the Minister said that over 5,000 dwelling units in 10 urban centers are in the process of being built within the framework of the Warsay-Yikaalo Development Campaign.
The Ministerial Cabinet held in-depth discussions on the reports presented by both ministers. The Cabinet assessed the encouraging steps being taken in the two sectors to streamline and improve work performance methods and emphasized the need to apply effective quality control mechanisms in specific areas such as imported construction materials, medicines and the like.
