Eritreans all over the world commemorated Martyrs Day, June 20, under the theme “Lofty Sovereign Dignity-Fruit of Supreme Martyrdom”. The official commemoration began on the 19th of June during the evening hours with candle light parades and artistic performances. In Asmara thousands of people from all walks of life flocked to the main street of Asmara, Harenet Avenue, to commemorate the day with candle light ceremony.
As Eritreans joyfully and enthusiastically celebrate May 24, Independence Day, they also equally celebrate June 20, Martyrs Day, in commemoration for those heroes and heroines who paid the dear lives for the Independence Day to happen. On the eve of the Martyrs Day, June 19, every Eritrean wherever he/she lives will conduct candle light vigil symbolizing that our heroes gave their lives for us to walk proud as Eritreans and live as people free and decide our destiny by ourselves. What a big and priceless gift we got through their blood and life.
The saying “Dogs bark and the camel continues its journey” is deep rooted axiom in the Eritrean society. Every Eritrean aspires to live through his/her toil without expecting outside help. And that concept has been for many years now the unwanted axiom and the economic, social and political foundation. They want Eritrea behave like the others who are standing alert to hear and do what they are told to do.

What a brilliant season of celebrations! We are 21 years old now and legally adults! “Birki Wetsina”.
Eritreans sure know how to show their jubilation – a carnival of festivities up and down the country, where young, elderly, men, women, and children, able bodied and those with disabilities all danced, sang, and cheered day and night. May 24th has gone down in history as the national day of independence and of honour.
The 21st Eritrean Independence Day was colorfully celebrated nation wide. The celebrations commenced on the 17th of May and went through until 24th of May. The celebrations included open music shows, carnivals, exhibitions, community gatherings and other variety of entertainment programs. All the programs had huge crowds either directly participating or as spectators. The night of 23rd of May was unique to my observation. Hundreds of thousands of Asmara residents flocked to Harenet Avenue to take part in the open music performances and enjoy dancing, strolling on the streets of Asmara or have fun with family, friends or otherwise.
Without considering the injustice that the Eritrean people had been experiencing in history (since the mid of the last century) as a result of the actions of the successive American administrations, in the last 13 years the Eritrean people and government faced untold political, military, economic, diplomatic and media pressures and obstacles caused by the US simply because it is feared that Eritrea’s independent choice can be ‘a bad example of a noble cause’ for African and other developing countries.
