Concerted Efforts Against Organic And Inorganic Pollutants

Delay always breads dangerous situations.  The more timely the solutions, one gets to solve any possible threats, and better the chances are for handling the unforeseen hazardous consequences that could result due to mismanagement. Keeping the environment intact with extra cautiousness and reinforcing laws that correspond with it, indeed, saves biodiversity from degradation and extinction lest health conditions of the general public remain under constant danger.

The Ministry of land, Water, and Environment along with other partners that are concerned with environmental stability and securing the ultimate goals of stable health conditions need to work in harmony. Eritrea is one of the developing countries has not been badly affected with environmental pollution; however, it is natural that along with the nation-building process some places that have been conserved in their natural state would face danger of ecological disarray.

Generally speaking, people are often susceptible to water and food borne or air born diseases. Different toxic remnants from factories and processed food that do not get proper handling could pose threats to the agriculture and foods. That is why concerned bodies from different ministries work towards the realization of creating sound ecology and robust health conditions of the society.

Though it acts in quality control of varied products; the National Standardization Office makes due contribution in controlling and reducing risks that could be caused due to poor conditions of imported and locally manufactured items of varied kinds. Items that don’t meet the standards of the bureau are prohibited from importation and distribution. Eng. Debesay Zerabruck said that labeling contents of productions is a rule of thump on every product and that the standardization office has the right to prohibit the product from being distributed.

Weeds, worms and birds could pose threats to agricultural productions. There are also pesticides and fertilizers used in boosting agricultural production. To this end proper utilization of pesticides, herbicides as well as the enforcements of due control mechanism on bio hazard chemicals is of necessity requisite for the conservation of the ecosystem.

The hazards of  varied chemicals doesn’t end on the agricultural fields or the factories that utilize chrome- a caner causing agent- to produce finished leather products.  The   leakage of chemicals persists in different forms. The grave pollutants remain even in the empty containers of chemicals and cause indoor and out door pollution. Thus importing less pollutants, proper management of stores and banning hazardous products importation remains the focal point to keeping intact the ecology and societal health.

The chemicals and sediments of industrial end products can cause severe health problems to the society. The introduction of water treatment plant could decrease the consequences of poor health conditions.  Eritrea’s Ministry of Trade and Industry also plays a vital role in the allocation of industrial zones so as to prevent the risks that could endanger the over all ecosystem. Thus, some factories that utilize health threatening chemicals such as tannery factories need to be reallocated to introduce water treatment plants.Eritrea has been putting in place vast agricultural infrastructures throughout the country, therefore, the expansion of agricultural areas results in the demand of huge pesticide and herbicide chemicals.

Early this week the ministry of Land, Water, and Environment conducted a workshop on proper handling of harmful chemicals and pesticides.  Director General of the department of environment Mr. Mogos Woldeyohannes, sated in the workshop the need to extra caution in importing pesticides and chemicals, as well as handling organic pollutants. He also pointed out that the workshop was aimed at charting control mechanisms towards doing away with prohibited organic pollutants and pesticides, besides raising the awareness of the society. Participants of the workshop also conducted in-depth discussions of the various papers presented at the workshop.
The integration among the ministry of land, water, and environment as well as other partner ministries would play due role in keeping intact the yet unpolluted terrestrial and marine resources of the country. Hence the workshop highlighted the need for the integrated ventures towards avoiding the risks of such bio hazard chemicals.
