Our Assembly: A Legislature of Development

The newly elected legislatures designated in the third regional assembly elections carried out nationwide have assumed their mandate on a journey to meet the challenges of the responsibilities bestowed upon them by the people and government of Eritrea. As H.E. President Isaias said in his meeting with the newly elected legislatures, “holding membership in the regional assembly or other government offices only means that promoting public interests are prioritized over personal benefits.” The President’s statement serves as a clear indicator of the expectations of the people and government of Eritrea and the responsibilities that lie ahead of the newly elected members of regional assemblies.
In the early times of state formation, the responsibilities of a government were only limited to drafting administrative laws, tax collection and defending the country from foreign aggressors. In the past century however, a government’s duty went far beyond the basic responsibilities that have been stated, to ensuring social and economic development, as well as playing a decisive role in achieving economic progress of a country. Especially in the Eritrean case, the government’s position in catalyzing the country’s development is imperative, considering the fact that Eritrea missed so many golden opportunities of progress due to consecutive colonialism. The government’s basic belief is therefore to redouble our efforts, speed up and intensify our march to progress so as to overcome the missed opportunities and lead Eritrea to an avenue of development in a short period of time. For this very fact of ensuring economic development to be accomplished, the existence of effective and vigorous institutions is important. The regional assemblies elected by the public are obviously to be seen within these institutions.
In Eritrea, Assembly does not only feature a legal and democratic government or prove public participation in leadership. Apart from these, Assembly has a very deep and important meaning in Eritrea. To find out the unfathomable tasks of the Assembly, one has to come across the outlooks and aims being in position by the government. Our sole dream is to have a democratic, peaceful, and prosperous Eritrea. Our vision doesn’t give space to “poverty reduction,” as is fashionable these days, but rather the complete eradication and conquest of hunger, poverty and dependence on food handouts. Our vision clearly sees a society that is proud of its identity with special features of interdependence with in the ranks as well as economic, educational and technological advancement and parity with the developed nations. Our vision is to bring about a culture of reverence within the diverse social groups of the country in line with proving equality and ensuring an organized economic development. Our dream is bringing about a society known for its nationalism, discipline, loyalty, respect to the law, morality and innovation. In brief, our vision is to achieve a miracle in economic independence.
The revelation of the government and people of Eritrea being these, the first and foremost tasks and responsibilities of the newly elected assembly members should be the deployment of every human and material resource of the country to developmental fronts, so as to meet the requirements of witnessing the dreams. So long as our dreams are to develop the country and upgrade the people’s standard of living, the very basic tasks of our assemblies will be drafting development programs and determinedly see for their implementation. In a nutshell, our assemblies are established to guarantee the country’s development and upgrade the people’s standard of living. Unlike assemblies of various other nations that focus on structure, the foundation of the Eritrean assembly is based on content and economic emancipation.
