President holds talks with US congressman
By Staff on Aug 10, 2004, 20:06

President Isaias Afwerki underlined that the TPLF regime’s claim that humanitarian crisis would ensue if the EEBC ruling is implemented is nothing else but an attempt to escape the dictates of law and prolong the real issue. As such, the President emphasized, the issue has no connection whatsoever with humanitarian crisis.

The President made these observations when he received and held talks today with US congressman Donald Payne. President Isaias further explained that the Eritrea-Ethiopia border issue is essentially about acceptance of international law, and thus stressed the need for speedy implementation of the EEBC ruling.

In the meeting, the President and Congressman Donald Payne discussed the gross human abuse in the Sudanese region of Darfur. In this connection President Isaias underscored the need for concerted acts by the international community to resolve the crisis.

The President assured the US congressman that Eritrea would do all in its power to help promote peace and stability in the Sudan, in the same way it has been exerting the necessary efforts towards achieving a peaceful resolution of the Southern Sudan problem. President Isaias further commended the efforts Congressman Donald Payne is making to promote stability in this region and called for continuation of the undertaking.

The congressman stated that he is deeply concerned with the prevailing situation in Darfur and indicated that he will strive for a peaceful settlement in of the crisis.

Earlier, the US congressman held similar talks with Eritrea’s Defence Minister General Sebhat Ephrem.
