The beginning of the 21st century heralds the end of parochialism, tribalism, and backwardness and the advent of broader economic and cultural integration, political moderation and supremacy of law and democracy. At this historical juncture, it is natural for reactionary elements opposing the spirit of the time to stand out. These elements in reaction to the new global perspectives and in an attempt to bring about situation of backwardness and ignorance are similar to that of the Dark Ages are presently flirting with fanaticism and terrorism. Although their reaction will eventually die out, for the time being it is causing damages in many parts of the world and specifically in the Middle East.
Fanaticism and its terrorist expression are only reactions of desperate groups with no political support from the people and with no political agenda of solid basis. For these reasons, terrorist groups prefer young people lacking in mental and intellectual maturity and those who wouldn’t question the indoctrination of fanatics or those who could be lured with gifts in order to perpetrate their acts of terror. Therefore, fanaticism has nothing to do with religious activism but is adopted by losers in global and political arena.
Although there are broad historical, psychological, political and socio-economic reasons, the main factors giving rise to terrorism are:-
1. Identity crises, inferiority complex, tribalism, isolation,
2. Frustration over failed military adventures and a lack of confidence in one’s military capacity.
3. Failure of one’s objectives, principles and ideologies and administrative inefficiency and the resulting fear of losing power.
4. Lack of courage to face reality.
The Sudanese and TPLF regimes that have been sponsoring acts of terrorism in Eritrea feature the above-mentioned factors.
- The leadership of both regimes are based on tribalism, parochialism and don’t represent the people.
- Due to the above-mentioned political problems and the resulting administrative failures, the two regimes are now in crises and chaos and this has threatened their stay in power.
- Unable to face their real situation and their internal problems through open mindedness and democratic ways, the two regimes are fighting to escape reality hence their paranoia.
- The TPLF large-scale invasion was concluded in a shameful defeat, its military capability is now limited and its integrity is being questioned by the international community and the Ethiopian people. Also the Sudanese regime after its failed attempt to crush the resistance of the Sudanese people is now in a desperate situation and has been forced to enter into peaceful negotiations.
Therefore, these two desperate regimes having forged unholy pact to support terrorism against Eritrea together with losers and fanatics is not surprising. The recent terrorist attacks and the testimony of those captured while in the act further shades light into their thuggish and terrorist nature.
Surely with the inevitable fall of these regimes, their weak terrorist attempts will also have an end. The Eritrean people and the Defense Forces who have recently shown their ability to foil terrorist acts and will always safeguard and ensure our national security.
