A lasting memory! Summer 2004

In early April Eritreans were celebrating the 2nd year anniversary of the Hague decision that awarded the symbolic town of Badme to it's rightful owner. Since then the spirit of the nation which thrives on "hade hizbi hade libi" has been on a roll with positive vibrations. As a person who had the opportunity to attend most of the events in America
and Eritrea, I feel honored to say that Eritrea is headed in the right direction. It's leadership is one that must be commended and it's strength is one that can never be weakened. It's biggest resource "THE PEOPLE" or should I say "SHAEBIA" have made me realize that the nation is stronger than ever.
Ok! I will start with the regional elections in Eritrea where an incredible 93% turnout proved that Eritreans know how to exercise their rights. Even in the most democratic nations people don't turnout to vote as Eritreans did this past May. For a person who
has covered elections in America where there was a big controversy at the national level in 2000, I was proud to see my land of origin had fared much better than my adopted homeland. It was a moment I can never forget.
On to Independence day in Asmara where I had a great opportunity to witness the celebrations throughout the country and at the Chichero Stadium. I learned that Independence day is a time when people cherish their hard earned freedom that continues to give Eritrea many reasons to appreciate it's sovereignty. Back to Washington D.C for Independence day celebrations where this year close to three thousand Eritreans gathered at the Marriott Wardman proving that Eritreans everywhere are united and stand firm in maintaining the independence of the nation vigorously.
Then it was off to West Virginia where close to 100 dehaiers and family convened to brainstorm and come up with ideas to help Eritrea. It was the 10th year anniversary and one of the best retreats ever. Shortly after, the 19th annual Eritrean Sports Festival in the beautiful city of San Jose took place. I must admit it was a very tough week and as a member of the coordinating team I was happy to see the end result was a success. Hopefully people will have an input in improving the event in the future. For me it
was surely a moment I can never forget as the Youth had a time of their lives. The Youth event organized hand in hand with the San Jose organizing committee and the Warsai Youth group has people still talking about it to this day. The future looks bright.
To top it off the Youth festival in Sawa along with the 10th year anniversary of the backbone of Eritrea's defense forces had to be one of the most exciting moments in my life. I have had an opportunity to attend and cover as a journalist many events in America including sporting events such as the world cup, NBA playoffs, NCAA tournaments, NFL playoffs, Baseball playoffs political conventions, musical concerts, religious celebrations and more but I must say that for me personally SAWA Festival and it's
meaning and it's achievements has to be one of the most memorable moments. With many Eritrean youth in attendance from every corner of the world, Sawa has proven it's stability as it becomes an institution of higher learning and a place that will insure the
security of our nation.
Then it is off to the season of celebrations and the maintenance of the Eritrean identity and culture, Festival 2004. The opening ceremony in Asmara was outstanding to say the least. Witnessing one of the best events with so much activity as well as exhibition of skills from all over Eritrea was truly a blessed moment. So as I get ready for the D.C festival this weekend I just want to say to all that Eritrea is stronger than ever and as a person who has had the opportunity to be a part of many events this year, I learned so much from my people. For those of you who are missing out because you have a different opinion, I can only advise you by saying go see for yourself how strong the Nation is.
For Americans reading this I just want to express that Eritrea and it's people which also happens to be it's government, does not have any ill will towards the U.S.A. or anyone for that matter. All Eritreans want is an opportunity to make life better for themselves through a peaceful means. Why can't the west understand this. If there is a peaceful Eritrea there will be an educated population and a stable region that can work hand in hand in destroying terrorism, poverty, aids, hunger and all the negative associated with Africa. Let the demarcation begin and the healing process begin.
Ethiopians should rise up and create a better atmosphere for their people so that they can live in harmony with their neighbors. It's time to make a difference so that everyone benefits, but one thing remains clear the Eritrean Government and people are the sole owners of their own country and will protect themselves from enemies while working to improve the lives of their people and help create peace for Africa and mankind in general.
God bless Eritrea and all peace loving people!
