National referral hospitals playing vital role in providing practical experience to young health professionals

The director of national referral hospitals in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Habteab Mehari, said that the referral hospitals are making major contribution in enabling young heath professionals acquire practical experience through working alongside veteran doctors.

Asmara, 9 July 2010 – The director of national referral hospitals in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Habteab Mehari, said that the referral hospitals are making major contribution in enabling young heath professionals acquire practical experience through working alongside veteran doctors.

He explained that on top of rendering reliable service to the public, the hospitals are creating conducive ground for the young graduates to gain practical experience through working along with local and foreign health experts. 

Dr. Habteab further pointed out that previously the referral  hospitals used to function on the basis of their own timetable. Since the year 2000, however, their organizational structure has been streamlined and equipped with the necessary advanced technology.

Moreover, he pointed out that the number of skilled manpower continues to grow, which in turn enabled the national referral hospitals to develop and expand.  In this connection, Dr. Habteab pointed out that offering specialization courses would be enhanced in various health fields in general and particularly in pediatrics, birth, delivery and general surgery.

There are 5 national referral hospitals in the country, namely Orotta, Halibet, Hazhaz, Birhan-Aini and St. Mary Psychiatric Hospital, according to reports.
