International Workers Day Colorfully Marked Nationwide

International Workers Day (May Day) was today marked in a colorful manner across the country under the theme “The Spirit of Work Rests on Healthy Environment.”

Asmara, 1 May 2010 –International Workers Day (May Day) was today marked in a colorful manner across the country under the theme “The Spirit of Work Rests on Healthy Environment.”

In a speech he delivered at the observances of the Day at national level that took place at the National Martyrs Park, the Secretary General of the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers (NCEW), Mr. Tekeste Baire, said that the Eritrean society especially the worker uphold the principle of self-reliance and hard work, as well as dynamically strive to change the objective situation to a better scenario.

Also speaking on the occasion, the Minister of Labor and Human Welfare, Ms. Salma Hassen, pointed out that May Day celebrations symbolize the determination to overcome challenges through work and struggle, and that work remains the sole potent weapon to achieve the set goal. 

Likewise, Mr. Zemhret Yohannes, Head of Research and Documentation at the PFDJ, pointed out that the People’s Front works to promote the interests and aspirations of the oppressed on priority basis. He further underlined that the main objective of the Eritrean government is to create a conducive ground in which the worker and labor are respected.

Reports indicated that members of the NCEW carried out reforestation and environmental sanitation activities in various parts of Asmara city and the National Martyrs Park on the occasion of May Day 2010 observances.

Meanwhile, in a statement it issued in connection with the International Workers Day, the NCEW stated that Eritrea is a country blessed with a society that upholds work as a culture. In this regard, the statement emphasized that self-reliance occupies paramount importance in the country’s development strategy in which work and the workforce constitute the backbone. Moreover, the statement underscores the need to put up strenuous endeavors for the realization of national development programs.
