Adi-Keih, 16 June 2010 - Members of the farming community in Der’a administrative area, Adi-Keih sub-zone, who are engaged in irrigation farming through making use of the micro-dam constructed in 2008 by the Government and partners have already begun to supply their products to the market.

The Administrator of the area, Mr. Girmai Zewde, stated that about 200 people are engaged in irrigation farming below the micro-dam and that they have managed to supply vegetables to the market for the first time.

The local inhabitants said that prior to the construction of the micro-dam, the land used to be depleted due to soil erosion during the rainy season. At present, however, they have managed to cultivate vegetables thanks to the micro-dam, they added.

The head of the Agriculture Ministry’s branch in the sub-zone, Mr. Bereqe Misgina, pointed out that two water pumping motors have been extended to the farmers engaged in such activities so as to encourage them, besides the digging of two wells.

The farmers stated that they have now managed to harvest twice a year both during rainy and dry seasons which was previously confined to the rainy season only.
