Asmara, 14 December 2017 - A discussion forum co-organized by the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW) and UNDP was organized on 13 December at the Central Office of the union with a view to strengthen understanding on the Global Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.

At the discussion forum that was organized to commemorate the end of the 16 days of Activism against Gender Based Violence campaign, Mr. Osman Saleh, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Tesfai Gebreselasie, Minister of Land, Water and Environment, Ms. Leul Gebreab, Minister of Labor and Human Welfare and members of the Diplomatic Corps took part.

Speaking at the event, Ms. Tekea Tesfamicael, President of the NUEW, stated that for decades the NUEW has focused on addressing women’s civil and political rights, drawing attention to gender-based abuses and discriminations, and that attests to the achievements registered in combating FGM and under age marriages.

Indicating that around the world more than 1 in 3 women have experienced physical and sexual violence in their lives, Ms. Suzan Ngongi, Representative of UNDP in Eritrea, said that 750 million women were married before the age of 18 and more than 250 million have undergone Female Genital Mutilation. Ms. Suzan went on to say that gender based violence against women and girls is one of the fundamental social, political and economic means by which the position of women with respect to men and their stereotyped roles are perpetuated.
