Eritrea Conquers African Championship in ttt and Itt Again

Africa’s cycling powerhouse Eritrea claims victory in the much-anticipated Team Time Trials (TTT) and Individual Time Trial (ITT) of the 13th African Continental Road Championship that commenced in Rwanda’s capital Kigali.

Asmara, 17 February 2018 -  Africa’s cycling powerhouse Eritrea claims victory in the much-anticipated Team Time Trials (TTT) and Individual Time Trial (ITT) of the 13th African Continental Road Championship that commenced in Rwanda’s capital Kigali.

Winning this edition of the African championship was another great milestone for the Eritrean elite men’s team as it turns out to be their unprecedented record 8th consecutive victory.

Mekseb Debesay, Metkel Eyob, Amanuel Gebreigzabhier and Simon Mussie took this year’s elite men TTT gold medal victory. They faced  the 40 km course in just 51’28”. Team Rwanda and Algeria are forced to settle for Silver and Bronze medals respectively. Ethiopia took the Gold medal in the women’s TTT whereas Eritrea and Rwanda finished second and third in this category.

On the elite women’s ITT category, Mosana Debesay took the Gold Medal following steps of her brother Mekseb Debesay who also won the elite men ITT. In the ITT in the 2018 African Continental Road Championships, Eritrea collected four gold medals from the possible five.

Eritrea also dominated the junior ITT both in the men and women’s category conquering the gold medals through Desiet Kidane and Binyam Girmay consecutively while Natan medhanie took the bronze medal. Team Eritrea also struck another Gold in junior men’s TTT fray.

This year’s event has attracted a total of 167 riders, representing 22 African countries including the giants of Africa such as Eritrea, Algeria, Morocco and South Africa.

Ever since 2011, the Eritrean National Team dominates the African Continental Championship competition and yet, no other African national team has managed to upset its absolute dominance.
