President holds talks with delegation from Sudanese Kasala region

Massawa, 15 February 2010 – President Isaias Afwerki received and held talks with the delegation from the Sudanese Kasala region that participated in the commemoration marking the 20th anniversary of Operation Fenkil. The talks focused on bilateral cooperation of partnership.

In the meeting, the delegation commended President Isaias’ role towards resolving Sudanese problems, and denounced the US-engineered sanctions resolution adopted in the name of the Security Council. It further asserted that the people of the Kasala region would stand alongside the people and Government of Eritrea.

Moreover, the delegation expressed readiness to strengthen the existing bilateral relations of friendship between Gash-Barka and Kasala regions in line with the cooperation agreement concluded between Presidents Isaias Afwerki and Omar Hassan Al-Beshir. It also extended invitation to President Isaias to pay visit to the Kasala region.

Expressing his acceptance of the invitation, the President noted that enhancing the people-based and historical relations between Eritrea and Sudan is for the benefit of both peoples. In this regard, he underlined the need for the neighboring regions to fully exploit this asset.
