Urgent action to be taken as regards renovating water diversion schemes in Gash-Barka region

Haikota, 12 March 2010 - The Administrator of Gash-Barka region, Mr. Mussa Rab’a, said that urgent action would be taken to renovate the damaged water diversion schemes in the region with a view to boosting agricultural output.

In a meeting with representatives of 12 administrative areas and employees in Haikota sub-zone, he highlighted the significance  of the existing two major water diversion schemes in the sub-zone in raising productivity. To this end, the necessary renovation activities would be carried out as regards the Hashenkit water diversion scheme before the onset of the rainy season, the Administrator added.

Noting that the nation’s priority development strategy remains that of the agriculture sector,  Mr. Mussa pointed out that the endeavors being made to enable every citizen own farmland on equal basis is progressing well in Haikota sub-zone.   

He further stressed the paramount importance of efficient and accurate information system in equitable allocation of national resources, and called on the inhabitants to back up the population and cattle census program scheduled to be carried out this year.

The Administrator of the sub-zone, Mr. Hamid Yosuf, on his part explained that the loopholes witnessed in the last rainy season negatively affected agricultural output in that year and stressed the need for effectively translating into practice the defectives given through properly identifying  the situation on the ground.

Expressing commitment to fulfill what is expected of them for the success of the all-round development programs, the local inhabitants adopted a number of resolution and recommendations highlighting the need to alleviate potable water supply problem, electricity and telephone service constraints in Haikota semi-urban center.

Over 1,200 hectares in Hashenkit, Alebu, Elit, Ruba Hadas and Tonton in the sub-zone are under cultivation through water diversion scheme. The construction of water reservoirs in the administrative areas of Libanyay, Gobosh and Hashenkit are also playing significant role in boosting cattle rearing, and that there are plans to undertake a similar task this year in Hademdemi and Haikota, reports indicated.
