National workshop on Arabic language education in Eritrean schools to be conducted
Asmara, 31 March 2010 - The Ministry of Education would organize a national workshop on Arabic language education in Eritrean schools from April 9 to 10 at Hotel Asmara Palace.
The Minister of Education, Mr. Semere Russom told ERINA that in line with strenuous endeavors being exerted to develop the student-centered teaching-learning process, special attention is equally being given to the task of developing language literacy and communication skills. He further pointed out that the forthcoming national workshop would devise means and strategies that will enable learners to master the Arabic language and improve their competence to the desired level.
Mr. Semere went on to say that the objectives of the workshop focus on conducting situational analysis of Arabic language teaching and learning in the Eritrean schools, identifying the main problems hindering effective teaching-learning process and exploring best practices of sound pedagogic approaches regarding second language teaching, particularly the Arabic language, besides adopting recommendations on the introduction of strategies for effective teaching and learning of the Arabic language.
Noting that the teaching and learning of the Arabic language has been carried out in elementary and junior levels, he explained that the Ministry is striving to help students master the language.
A number of study papers would be presented by experts and intellectuals focusing on the historical background of the Arabic language in Eritrea, teaching-learning process of Arabic language in the Eritrean schools, the experience of some countries that teach Arabic as a second language, challenges of teacher requirements and possible solution, experience of the Asmara Teacher Training Institute on Arabic program, the role of the Arabic language in the daily life of Eritrean society, the role of mass media in the promotion of Arabic language teaching and learning, the importance of the Arabic language as a means of communication in the region and the like.
