Significant drop in mother mortality rate reported in Southern Red Sea region

Assab, 26 July 2010 - Mother mortality rate during pregnancy and delivery has significantly dropped in Southern Red Sea region thanks to the growing awareness of the society in general and mothers in particular.

The head of fertility and vaccination in the region, Mr. Gebregziabher Kesete, indicated that the number of pregnant mothers who make medical checkups is on the rise, and that the setting up of a waiting hall for pregnant mothers is making due contribution in this regard.

Noting that the majority of the death rates used to occur in the post-delivery period, Mr. Gebregziabher said that health professionals conduct medical checkups on mothers and infants through visiting their respective homes once a week at the minimum. He further explained that health experts undertake vaccination campaign through traveling to remote areas every 3 months.
