Mother and Child Mortality Rate During Delivery Dramatically Dropped in Southern Region

Mendefera, 6 August 2010 - Mother and child mortality rate during delivery in the Southern region has dramatically dropped as a result of the expansion of health service and the undertaking of campaign and lecture.

The head of mother and child health care at the Health Ministry’s branch in the region, Ms. Meaza Kelati, indicated that at present over 70% of pregnant mothers are receiving the necessary medical service and counseling, which in turn contributed to the reduction of mortality rate to 0.1%.

She further stressed the need for fostering close coordination among the Ministry of Health, administrative bodies and the community at large so as to reduce mother and child mortality rate during delivery to below zero.
