This Year’s Summer Work Program Effective: Reports

Asmara, 3 September 2010 - This year’s Summer Work Program was effective thanks to the showering of good pattern of rains, stated Mr. Fitwi Woldegergis, head of the Program in the Education Ministry.

He indicated that about 20,000 students took part in the program undertaken in 171 stations at the national level, and that over 85% of the envisaged tasks have been accomplished.

Noting that the greater part of the task focused on soil and water conservation activities, Mr. Fitwi explained that about 1 million different types of tree seedlings which are economically beneficial have been planted.

The participants were also actively engaged in the renovation of school materials and furnishing of classrooms, as well as collecting stones for the construction of schools and participating in other social activities.

Reports indicated that the awareness of the society in the campaign and in soil and water conservation is on the rise, and  as a result the participation of administrators and the general public in the program was quite commendable.

Mr. Fitwi went on to say that although the tree seedlings are planted in reserve areas, continued supervision and protection is imperative for better outcome.
