Administrator urges general public to apply judicious utilization of water resource

Asmara, 7 September 2010 - The Administrator of the Central region, Mr. Kahsai Gebrehiwet, called on the general public to apply judicious utilization of water resource so that the micro-dams and reservoirs would play increased role in ensuring potable water supply and facilitating development endeavors.

He told ERINA that concerted action is being taken in the administrative areas of Embaderho, Ametsi, Himbirti, Adi-Tsenaf and Tselot in a bid to introduce a mechanism for economical utilization of water resource.

Noting that the development programs under implementation by the Government fully benefit the farming community, Mr. Kahsai explained that agricultural experts have been deployed in 84 villages of the region to provide scientific and professional advice to farmers so as to enable them obtain bumper harvest.  The Administrator also urged farmers to actively engage in weeding activities and extend a helping hand to needy compatriots.

The head of soil and water conservation program in the Agriculture Ministry’s branch in the region,  Eng. Abraham Daniel, said on his part that a new micro-dam was constructed this year at an expenditure of over 7 million Nakfa which would provide potable water supply to the inhabitants of Adi-Tsenaf, Adi-Ke and Ademzemat. The necessary renovation task was also undertaken to double the storage capacity of the micro-dam that is serving the villages of Tseazega, Tsaeda-Kristian and Tsaeda-Emba, he added.

Indicating that over 80% of the existing micro-dams in the region have impounded satisfactory amount of water, Eng. Abraham stated that efforts are underway to effectively utilize the available water resource, besides channeling it for agricultural purpose through introducing modern operational mechanism.

He went on to say that land plots below micro-dams are endowed with rich underground water resource and that the digging of wells is being carried out to ensure the provision of potable water supply.
