Asmara, 16 May 2008 - In an interview he gave to a Sudanese newspaper, President Isaias Afwerki underlined that ensuring peace and stability in the Sudan equally benefits Eritrea.

In the interview focusing on Eritrean-Sudanese relations, the experience of the Eritrean people’s struggle for independence, the challenges Eritrea met since liberation and the achievements registered, as well as regional and international issues, the President pointed out that Sudanese issues primarily concerns the nationals of that country and that other things are secondary. “And whenever necessary, Eritrea is ready to make due contribution,” he stated.

Noting that in Eritrean-Sudanese relations there are historical ties between both people, President Isaias said that it is the responsibility of generations to develop such relations to the desired level. He further stated that the existing bilateral relations in the domains of economy, trade and investment are very promising and added that there exists goodwill and institutional preparedness on the part of both sides. In this regard, the President elaborated that serious and continued efforts are being exerted to further enhance and strengthen relations in a manner that serves the interest of both peoples, in addition to providing impetus to the development momentum.

“The opportunities and desire are there; and the progress would be attained in due course,” the President stated. He further emphasized that the most important thing is to take the initiative.

Indicating that independence does not only symbolize the driving out of colonialists and flag waving, the President explained that nation-building is the major challenge. In this connection, he pointed out that the prevailing social, cultural, political and economic situation in Eritrea is by far better than that of a number of African countries thanks to the programs so far implemented on the basis of the principle of self-reliance. Stressing the significance of complementary steps and partnership to this end, President Isaias explained that Eritrea is working to further develop the existing relations and partnership with Sudan.

Stating that standing firm in one’s principles and working tirelessly are the main factors of Eritrea’s success, the President pointed out that the visible outcome of the Eritrean government’s economic policies towards ensuring equal opportunities and services is fully demonstrated in the improvement of the people’s living standards.
