Asmara, 17 May 2008 – The Minister of National Development, Dr. Woldai Futur, said that significant achievements have been scored in a number of socio-economic development programs in the post-independence period. In an interview with ERINA, the Minister outlined the major accomplishments in the domains of education, health and agriculture, as well as transport and communications.
Dr. Woldai pointed out that the number of students has dramatically increased from 60,000 at the time of liberation to 7000,000 at present, and that a number of colleges have opened in different parts of the country as part of efforts to develop the nation’s human resource capacity. A total of 20,000 students are being enrolled in these institutions of higher learning, he added.
Also pointing out that remarkable outcome has been registered in the health sector, the Minister noted that a number of hospitals and health centers, as well as referral hospitals at the nationals, regional and sub-zonal levels have opened and are rendering vital services to the people, including remote areas.
Furthermore, Dr. Woldai explained that in line with efforts to expand energy supply services, 32% of the general public have now become beneficiaries of electricity supply and that telephone and mobile services are being provided to an increasing number of nationals not only in the urban centers but also the countryside.
As regards prospects for adequately harnessing the country’s energy and mine resources, he indicated that despite the fact that encouraging achievements have already been registered, a lot still remains to be done so as to fully exploit such resources.
Moreover, he stressed the vital importance of developing the fisheries sector, and that vigorous efforts are underway to put in place the required infrastructure and market facilities to this end. Dr. Woldai went on to say that different rules, regulations and policies have been mapped out to lay a solid ground for the effective implementation of national development programs.
