A high-level Eritrean delegation led by President Isaias Afwerki participated in the “Conference of the Sudanese People’s Initiative towards Peaceful Resolution of the Darfur Issue” on 12 November 2008 and once again reaffirmed the ever-genuine support of the people and Government of Eritrea to the initiatives for peace by the brotherly people of Sudan.
Peace and stability are not limited within the borders of one nation; hence, stability in the Sudan will entail similar benefits for the whole region. The Eritrean people and government’s stand regarding the achievement of comprehensive peace in the Sudan emanates from the aforementioned outlook, and according to the Eritrean people the only remedy for a domestic problem is not external intervention but an internal initiative. And home-grown solutions can only be secured in private conferences by rectifying inherent mistakes, identifying potential causes of internal strife and challenging direct or covert external interferences. Indeed, at a time when the internationalization of domestic problems and the complication of simple peace processes for the sake of securing external interests have become the order of the day, bowing down to pressure from external forces can only lead to further complication of conflicts.
Thus, the initiative taken by the brotherly people of Sudan to resolve their own issue being the only right path that leads to meaningful solution, the people and Government of Eritrea will as always extend their genuine support.
