May 14: A Day that Proved the Eritrean Government’s Wisdom and Farsightedness
Ten years ago on this historic day, the Government of Eritrea issued a release in response to the TPLF regime’s abrupt declaration of war, thus demonstrating the wisdom and patience of the people and Government of Eritrea. As has been proven in the past ten years, the TPLF’s declaration of war on May 13, 1998 had been a very tragic and historical disaster for both peoples of Eritrea and Ethiopia who had only briefly began to experience good neighborly relations based on mutual cooperation following 30 years of war.

May 13: The Day the TPLF Embarked on a Suicide Mission
Ten years ago on May 13, 1998 the TPLF regime officially declared war on Eritrea. In their overall history, the Eritrean people have frequently been victimized by Ethiopian leaders. However, contrary to the objectives of Ethiopian leaders, the Eritrean people staunchly prevailed while the Ethiopian leaders themselves faced demises one after the other. Moreover, foiling every attempt and conspiracy for their annihilation with superb military skills, the Eritrean people were able to demonstrate that no force can ever obstruct the existence and continuity of a free people and nation.

A Fantasy that Led to Strategic Mistakes and Failures
It is now 10 years since the TPLF regime unleashed a war of aggression against Eritrea. It is to be recalled that disregarding its own acts of provocation, the TPLF regime on May 6, 2008 claimed to have been ‘invaded’ by Eritrea. This fictitious accusation had been a strategic mistake and a foolish dream that led to a quagmire of defeat and failure. Moreover, while an Eritrean envoy was in Addis Ababa to investigate the minor conflict that had apparently taken place in the Badme area, the TPLF regime convened the parliament and declared war against Eritrea on May 13, 1998. At that moment the clique was not aware that the consequences of this strategic mistake would be dangerous and destructive.

The Core of the Secret
The Eritrean people’s fortitude in overcoming the myriad of trials to achieve unity and harmony is comparable to only few peoples in the history of the world. The Eritrean people had struggled not only for independence but also to achieve an unbreakable sense of unity and oneness among all nationals. Unlike other flags in the world, which are raised mainly for the purpose of identity, the Eritrean flag has a life of its own for it is not made of mere cotton threads but that of the values of the Eritrean people’s struggle.

Ethiopian People: Main Victims of TPLF Adventurism
Facing fast-approaching demise as a result of its adventurism, the TPLF regime is a terrorist clique that has plunged Ethiopia into an economic crisis and grave political turmoil by pursuing sub-national politics. Coming to power illegally in the first place, in May 2005 the TPLF staged a failed charade to achieve legality and please its masters by manipulating the people’s vote. However, the Ethiopian people could no longer be deceived; the results of the elections exposed the regime’s duplicity and ensued in violent popular opposition.

Ethiopian People: Main Victims of TPLF Adventurism
The TPLF clique pursues sub national and divisive politics to gain control over the people, compromising the Ethiopian people’s opportunities in order to secure the interests of a minority group. However, contrary to the regime’s objectives, this childish approach has only served in hastening its downfall. The May 2005 elections and the ensuing turmoil are a patent indication of the extent of the Ethiopian people’s opposition towards the regime’s divide and rule tactics.

Ethiopian People: Main Victims of TPLF Adventurism
As a result of TPLF adventurism, Ethiopia over the past 17 years not only sustained repeated and humiliating military defeats but has also been exposed to extreme poverty and economic crisis. Totally dependent on foreign aid, the overall situation in Ethiopia has deteriorated to a stage where it has become difficult for its nationals to express their identity. The international community, in general, and various governments in the world, in particular, could learn much from the experience of TPLF military adventures. The TPLF objective is based on a misguided notion that since the world only respects the use of force one can gain prominence over their people and neighbors through the use of force.

Ethiopian People: Main Victims of TPLF Adventurism
The history of successive Ethiopian leaders is identified with acute lack of self-worth and not enough faith in their people and resources. Emperor Haile Selassie was a well known agent for the United States in the Horn region. Receiving massive military and political support from western nations in return for favors received, the emperor allowed the US to establish a military base in forcibly occupied Eritrean territory and gambled with the lives of Ethiopian youth in the wars in Korea and Congo. Similar to the preceding regime, the Derg was also unable to sustain itself and had to depend on Soviet Union charity However, the external powers that these regimes’ had put so much faith in could not guarantee them a stay in power at the expense of the Ethiopian people’s rights, for there is no power that can trample over a just cause.

Gearing Up Against Natural Challenges
Achieving food security being the priority task in our development strategy, the abundant rains in 2007 and the necessary agricultural infrastructure that was laid out beforehand had enabled us to reap a bumper harvest. Although nature had indeed cooperated, the good harvest in 2007 has been primarily a result of the hard work and determination of the Eritrean people, government and the defense forces. As a result of this resourcefulness, our capacity to conserve water has improved and we have been able to open a small window towards enhanced irrigation farming. Although we have indeed been able to secure a bumper harvest, our agricultural policies have yet to outline programs for sustainable solutions, all the necessary infrastructure has not been finalized and we are still largely dependent on rain for our agricultural activities while the threat of poor rains loom over most of the Horn region.

Putting an End to TPLF Regime’s Occupation: The Sole Duty of the Security Council Following Implementation
Had the UN Security Council exercised its mandate according to Chapter 7 of the UN Charter, and fulfilled its duty of enforcing the EEBC’s final and binding decision according to Article 14 of the Algiers Agreement, the border demarcation process would have been finalized by November 2003 and the last five years would have provided the opportunity to make up for the losses sustained by the brotherly peoples of Eritrean and Ethiopia during the war.
